Wilsonville, Oregon: New street plaza

Okay, here is what I'll be proposing at the coming city council meeting. It's what we created at our last meeting:

Image

They are currently marked "phases," but we'll fix that before we go into the meeting. This is first draft.

Phase 1 are parks that are ready to go. All we need to do is figure out how big we want, raise funds, and go. They are numbered (1,2,3) by the order we will build them.

Phase 2, marked with number 4 (one is improperly marked), are parks that require some groundwork to be done with the neighborhoods.

Phase 3 is the park that's private and we don't expect to build there. If it wasn't for the neighborhood, the park wouldn't be there. Given the intimate nature of the park, we think they may not be warm to anything but the smallest spot, but we gotta ask.

Phase 4 are sites that require a masterplan, as you may or may not know requires a bunch of work and at least 2-3 years of process before we can even think about building.

There you have it.

If there's a lesson here, it's that a skatepark system can be sold, even to a community of just 15,000 people, in less than 6 months.

Of course, we have to present the concept to the city council, and we'll see what they say, but I haven't got an indication they aren't going to be into it, probably because it doesn't really cost them anything, yet, other than people resources, which I really really appreciate. Peggy is priceless.

It would be prudent to get to them individually prior to presenting to the council as a whole.

This would be best done by someone who lives in the community that the individual council member serves. Especially if those are elected positions and any of them are up for re-election this coming November.

Tom Miller and I spoke about this one day over lunch. If they are approached by a group of people (or an individual) about a "possible" contribution to their campaign who would like to meet with them, they will meet with you. If that is followed up by any monetary contribution they will never forget who you are.

There's been some council turnover, so I have some hand-shaking to do.

This showed up in the paper today:

Re: quoted price for street parks. We know what's happened in Driggs, Idaho and Smithsville, TX (parks that cost about $5-$8 a sq/ft for street). This has resulted in a lot of controversy from the vendors who say that's not possible.

I've been working with Steph from Airspeed to understand the discrepancy between these relatively inexpensive projects and the other end of the spectrum; where concrete vendors claim street costs $35-$40 a sq/ft.

Where is the controversy? I have not read of any, did I miss it?

I just stalked with the treasurer for the Driggs Park and we will have all the numbers tallied and totaled in a week or 2, with records of where every dollar went. When I receive that I will post it up in its entirety

Hey Kent, what is the status of this Wilsonville work? That Phase 2 site you identified is very close to my house. As I mentioned in that other thread, let me know if I can help with anything.

Winter happened. Justin went to Gresham, and our other contact broke her hand. I had surgery, and Justin's replacement was hired. Plus some stuff went down with one of our key student advocates. We haven't met since October; it's all been emails since. Once you learn details you'll understand why its made sense to slow a bit.

But it's high time we meet again. Care to drop me a line so we can kick this off again?
